Education student Jamie Steigerwalt recently wrote to me about what she presented in class as part of an author/book study. With her permission, I’m reprinting it here.

I just wanted to send you a quick note to let you know how my presentation went last night. Everything went well and my class was very excited to hear about you. I must admit, it was so easy to talk about you and your books. I chose to do my activities on Hush Little Puppy, Stars Beneath Your Bed, and Splish, Splash, Animal Baths. I did a phonics activity with Hush Little Puppy and focused on rhyming. I made rhyming charts and students would have to match pictures on one side of the chart with its rhyme on the other side. I attached yarn to one side and had velcro on the other side for the yarn to be attached. I did a word study activity for Stars Beneath Your Bed and picked vocabulary from within the book. I then used fun foam and cut star shapes and on one star I wrote the vocabulary word and another star contained a picture. The students would then flip over all the stars and play a memory game to match the picture with the word. My last activity was a comprehension activity with Splish, Splash, Animal Baths. Students would fill out a KWL chart using this book. Before the students read the book they would write what the already Know about animal baths. Then they would write what they Want to know about animal baths. After reading the book, students would record what they learned about animal baths.

I really enjoyed reading your books to prepare for my presentation and it was wonderful researching your background and getting to know more about you. You definitely seem very passionate about what you write about and that is so exciting. I really enjoyed planning classroom activities using your books. Also, to motivate my class and engage them in the lesson I told them we were going to take a trip to Panama and I followed that with reading Army Ant Parade. This really grabbed everyone’s attention and gave them a sense of your writing style before I even started my presentation.

It allows them to ask meaningful questions relevant to the kind of writing the author does. Yes, it is a lot of work. But anything that the coordinator can do to get the kids fired up for the visit will help. Constant reminders of the event will help educators tie in author study and literacy prior to the event.

Follow up is important as well. Teacher Mrs. Schwartz at Hamilton Traditional School in South Bend returned to the classroom and talked with her students about what they remembered/had learned from April Sayre’s talk. Posting this kind of chart can help the teacher and student tie in what was learned with lessons in the weeks to come.

REGARDING BOOKS, VISITS, NEWS
I began gathering these via google alerts in late 2007 so I have likely missed gobs from previous years. This is not organized…just a collection for those doing research.

Practicing What We Publish
By Charlesbridge(Charlesbridge)
Inspired by April Pulley Sayre’s Trout Are Made of Trees, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and in celebration of American Rivers’ National River Clean Up, Charlesbridge staff made a day of it down the road at …
Unabridged – http://charlesbridge.blogspot.com/

Where do schools find funds for author visits?

P.T.O.s, Title I funds, local businesses, state arts councils, library funds, magazine sales, book fairs, Fall festivals, bequests, principal gifts . . . . the sources are diverse.

One school I visited raised funds by auctioning off the primo parking spot in front of the school to a parent each year so they could pull in easily and comfortably! The parking spot had a special sign.

In conjunction with one visit I did, a local Rotary Club provided funds to give each student a paperback book.

Here is a link to a list of funding sources for school visits and other library activities:

http://www.leeandlow.com/p/administrators_grants.mhtml

Here is information on a visit award

Maureen Hayes

Author/Illustrator Visit Award was established with funding from Simon &

Schuster Children’s Publishing. The award honors Maureen Hayes life-long

effort to make such visits a reality. The award provides up to $4,000 towards

the honorarium and travel costs of a writer/illustrator to visit a location

where children might otherwise never have this amazing opportunity. Applicant

must be an ALSC member, work in conjunction with other organizations, and be

able to supply administrative support, facilities and visibly promote this

presentation as a distinctive event.

For more information visit the ALSC website
